Copyfolio vs Ghost (2026): Which Is Better for a Writer's Portfolio?
Copyfolio is a portfolio builder made for writers; Ghost is a publishing platform with a blog, newsletter and memberships you own. Prices, features, ownership and which to choose in 2026.

If you write for a living, your portfolio does one job: it makes an editor or a client trust you quickly enough to get in touch. Copyfolio is a portfolio builder made for exactly that, for copywriters, content writers and marketers. Ghost is an open-source publishing platform, with a website, a blog and a newsletter in one.
Both can hold a writer's portfolio. They make very different bets on what you need. This comparison covers what each one does well, what it costs, who owns what, and which to pick for your situation.
Prices are in US dollars and were checked on each platform's pricing page in October 2026.
The short answer
- Choose Copyfolio if you want a good-looking portfolio online this week, with case studies, PDF samples and an AI helper, and you don't plan to publish much beyond it.
- Choose Ghost if your portfolio is the start of something bigger: a blog that ranks, a newsletter that builds an audience, maybe paid subscriptions, on a site you own and can move anywhere.

What Copyfolio does well
Copyfolio is built by the team behind UXfolio and aimed squarely at writers, social media marketers and UGC creators. It does the portfolio part better than a general website tool:
- Case studies. A dedicated project type walks you through the brief, the work and the result, which is how clients like to read copywriting work.
- Every kind of sample. Upload PDFs, link out to published pieces, or add videos for UGC and social work.
- Help with the words around the work. An AI writing assistant, and brand-building quizzes that help you find your niche and tone.
- Little to set up. Pick a template, fill in the sections, connect a domain, publish. No hosting, themes or email settings to think about.
- Password protection. Useful for work under NDA that you can only show privately.
What Ghost does better
Ghost isn't a portfolio tool. It's a publishing platform, and for many writers that's the point: the portfolio gets you the first client, the writing keeps them coming.
- A newsletter built in. Every post can go out by email. Readers subscribe on your site, and you own the list.
- Paid subscriptions. Turn your writing into income with free and paid tiers. Ghost takes 0%; you pay Stripe's card fees.
- A blog that ranks. Clean code, fast pages, sitemaps, structured data and full control over SEO titles and descriptions.
- Any design. Ghost themes control every page, so your site can look like no one else's.
- Ownership. Ghost is open source. Export your posts and members, or move the whole site to another host, at any time.
Pricing
Copyfolio has one paid plan. After a 7-day free trial, Premium costs $15 a month, or $108 a year if you pay yearly. During the trial, and if you don't upgrade, your site stays private: only you can see it. Publishing, custom domains, site analytics, SEO settings, blog posts and password protection are Premium features.

Ghost costs depend on where you run it:
- Ghost(Pro) Starter, $18 a month ($15 yearly), up to 1,000 members. It only runs Ghost's official themes, so no custom portfolio design (more in Can you use a custom theme on Ghost(Pro) Starter?).
- Ghost(Pro) Publisher, $35 a month ($29 yearly) at 1,000 members, with custom themes and paid subscriptions.
- Self-hosted or managed Ghost from about $3 a month on PikaPods, or on a managed host like Magic Pages. Any theme works. See cheap Ghost hosting.
The theme is a separate cost. Ghost's free themes are blog-first, so most writers either buy a theme or build one. Ectobuilder is free to design in; publishing a theme to your site takes Pro at $79 a year, which covers three sites.
| Your setup, first year | Cost |
|---|---|
| Copyfolio Premium, yearly | $108 |
| Ghost on PikaPods + Ectobuilder Pro | about $36 + $79 = $115 |
| Ghost(Pro) Starter, yearly, official theme | $180 |
| Ghost(Pro) Publisher, yearly + Ectobuilder Pro | $348 + $79 = $427 |
For a portfolio alone, Copyfolio is the cheapest finished product, and the simplest. Ghost costs about the same if you host it cheaply, and more on Ghost(Pro), but you get a newsletter and memberships in the price.
Building a writer's portfolio on Ghost
The catch with Ghost is design. Its themes are made for publications, and changing one usually means editing Handlebars and CSS. That's the gap Ectobuilder fills: you design the theme visually, from ready-made sections, and publish it to Ghost in one click.
For a writer, the useful sections are the ones Copyfolio is good at too: a hero with your photo and positioning, a "worked with" logo wall, services, selected work as cards linking to case-study posts, testimonials, and a contact form or a booking button. Under it, your blog and a newsletter signup, which Copyfolio doesn't have.

If your work is visual, start from the Architecture Studio or Wedding Photographer theme. For a writing-led site with a newsletter at its heart, the Newsletter theme is a good start. Every section can be changed by clicking; see how to build a Ghost theme visually.
Build your portfolio on Ghost, without code.
Start from a gallery theme, swap in your work and your words, and publish to your Ghost site. Free to design; pay only when you go live.
The catch with each
Copyfolio's catch is that it stops at the portfolio. There's no newsletter, no members and no paid content, and your site lives on Copyfolio: if you leave, you rebuild it elsewhere. And there's no free plan for a public site: after the trial, it's $15 a month or nothing goes live.
Ghost's catch is setup. You choose a host, a theme and, for newsletters on a self-hosted site, an email service like Mailgun. A portfolio layout takes a theme that has one, or a builder. There's no AI writing assistant inside Ghost.
Which should you choose?
- You need a portfolio to send to clients, fast: Copyfolio.
- You show work under NDA: Copyfolio's password protection makes this easy. On Ghost, use members-only pages.
- You want to build an audience, not just a portfolio: Ghost.
- You may sell subscriptions or paid posts one day: Ghost.
- You want a site you own and can move: Ghost.
- You want both, but simple: start on Copyfolio, and move to Ghost when your writing outgrows the portfolio.
FAQ
Is Copyfolio free?
There's a 7-day free trial with Premium features, but your site stays private until you upgrade. To publish it, Premium costs $15 a month, or $108 a year.
Can I use Ghost as a portfolio?
Yes. Ghost runs any theme, so it can look like a portfolio, with your blog and newsletter underneath. You need a theme with portfolio sections, or a builder like Ectobuilder to design one.
Can I move from Copyfolio to Ghost?
There's no importer, so you rebuild the site: copy your case studies into Ghost posts or pages, upload your images and PDFs, and point your domain at Ghost. Add redirects for old URLs; see how to find and redirect missing pages.
Does Ghost have an AI writing assistant?
Not built in. You can write with any AI tool and paste into Ghost, or connect Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini to your Ghost site through Ectobuilder's MCP connector to draft and publish posts.
Which is better for SEO?
Ghost, if you plan to publish regularly: it's built for blogs, with sitemaps, structured data and fast pages. Copyfolio has SEO settings on Premium, which is enough for a portfolio people find by your name.
Your portfolio, your newsletter, your site.
Design a Ghost theme by clicking, from about 270 sections, and publish it in one click. Start free.
