- Description: Ectobuilder's Site audit reads every public page of your Ghost site, lists what keeps it out of search results, and fixes most of it for you, with every change shown before it's saved.

Most Ghost sites have the same handful of search problems. Posts go out without a meta description. Titles run past what Google shows. A page loses its main heading in a redesign, an old link points at a post that moved, and nobody notices because the site still looks fine.

None of these are hard to fix. The hard part is finding them, one post at a time. Ectobuilder now does that part for you. **Site audit** reads every public page on your Ghost site, lists what's wrong in plain words, and fixes most of it with one click. Every fix it writes is shown to you before anything is saved.

![Ectobuilder Settings, Site audit results: 5 to fix, 6 to improve and 4 passed, with an Auto fix button and a list of issues, each with a manual button and an Auto fix button](https://www.ectobuilder.com/content/images/2026/10/image-mvmsfvay.webp)

The results of an audit. Example data.

## What the site audit checks

The audit runs 15 checks in six groups. They're rules, not guesses: run it twice on the same site and you get the same list.

- **Titles and descriptions.** Posts and pages with no meta description, descriptions that are too long or too short for Google to show whole, titles over 60 characters, and pages that share a title with another.
- **Headings.** Pages with no main heading (H1), and pages with more than one.
- **Images.** Pictures in your posts with no alt text, which screen readers and image search skip.
- **Links and sitemap.** Addresses in your sitemap that answer with an error, links on your own pages that lead to a "not found" page, and pages listed in the sitemap but marked to stay out of search.
- **Site details.** An empty site description, a home page with no sharing image, tags with no description, and authors with no photo or bio.
- **Structured data.** Whether breadcrumbs are on, so Google can show the path to a post instead of its address.

It reads your site the way a search engine does: it starts from your sitemap, opens each page, and looks at what's actually there. It also asks Ghost about your posts, pages, tags and authors, so every problem it finds comes with the post it belongs to.

## How to run an audit

1. Open your theme in Ectobuilder and connect your Ghost site, if you haven't yet (**Settings → Integrations → Ghost Admin API**).
2. Go to **Settings → Site audit** and click **Run audit**.
3. Wait about a minute for 100 pages. You can watch it work through the pages, or close Settings and come back: the results wait for you.

![Site audit in progress: Checking fieldnotes.blog, 10 of 10 pages, with a progress bar and a Stop button](https://www.ectobuilder.com/content/images/2026/10/image-mvmsfnza.png)

The audit checks up to 200 pages per run, starting with your home page and then everything in your sitemap. Only your own site is read: links to other sites are left alone.

## Reading the results

At the top you see how many pages were checked and three counts: **To fix**, **To improve** and **Passed**. The tab itself shows a red number while anything is left to fix, so you notice it next time you open Settings.

Below that, every issue is one row. The red ones cost you visibility now: missing descriptions, cut-off titles, broken links. The orange ones are worth doing but won't hurt much if they wait.

![The To improve list: a description that's too long, an empty site description, a missing sharing image, a tag with no description, an author with no photo, and breadcrumbs turned off](https://www.ectobuilder.com/content/images/2026/10/image-mvmsfpq3.webp)

Each row has two buttons, and they always sit in the same place:

- **The left button fixes it by hand.** It takes you where the fix belongs: the post in Ghost's editor, the tag in Ghost Admin, or the right Settings tab in Ectobuilder, like Redirects for a broken link.
- **Auto fix does it for you**, when it can. Under each issue you'll see where the fix lands: *Saves to Ghost* (live at once) or *Needs deploy* (part of your theme, live after your next deploy).

Some things only you can do, like adding your own photo to your author profile. For those, Auto fix is grayed out and the left button opens the right page.

## Auto fix, checked before it's saved

For text, Auto fix writes a suggestion for each item and shows you the whole list first. Nothing reaches Ghost until you click **Apply**.

![Site audit / Meta descriptions: a suggested description for each post, with a checkbox, an editable text box and a character count, and an Apply button at the bottom](https://www.ectobuilder.com/content/images/2026/10/image-mvmsfruc.webp)

Edit any suggestion, untick the ones you don't want, then apply.

It can write four kinds of text:

- **Meta descriptions** for posts and pages that have none, or whose description is too long or too short. Each one is written from the post's own text, in the language of your site.
- **SEO titles** for posts whose title is too long for search results. Your post keeps its title; only the title Google shows changes.
- **Tag descriptions**, written from the titles of the posts under each tag. They show on the tag page and as its meta description.
- **Your site description**, from your site's name and recent posts. This one needs a Ghost staff token, since it's a site setting.

Every suggestion is in a text box you can edit, with a character count that turns green inside the length Google shows. Untick anything you'd rather write yourself. When you apply, the fixes are saved to Ghost and are live straight away, and the issue leaves the list.

Two fixes are switches rather than text: **breadcrumbs** and **automatic alt text** for pictures. Auto fix turns them on in your theme, and they reach your site with your next deploy.

## What Auto fix leaves to you

- **Broken links and pages that don't open.** The audit lists each missing address and the page that links to it. The fix is a redirect: open **Settings → Redirects** and send the old address to the right page.
- **Main headings.** A page with no H1, or more than one, needs a change in its design. The left button opens the page so you can see it.
- **Your sharing image and author photo.** These are your pictures to choose. The left button opens the right place in Ghost Admin.

## SEO settings and the audit

The audit has its own tab, right above **SEO**. The SEO tab is where you set things up (rich results, llms.txt, page descriptions, alt text), and the audit is where you check how it all turned out. A line at the top of the SEO tab shows how many issues your last audit found, with a button to open it.

![Settings, SEO tab with a banner at the top: 11 issues in your last site audit, 6 can be fixed automatically, and an Open site audit button](https://www.ectobuilder.com/content/images/2026/10/image-mvmsftjp.png)

## How often to run it

Run it once now, fix what it finds, and run it again: the second list is usually short. After that, run it whenever you've published a batch of posts, changed your theme, or moved content around. Moves and redesigns are when broken links and lost headings creep in.

A clean audit doesn't guarantee rankings. Google still decides what to show, and what you write matters more than any setting. But an audit with nothing left to fix means search engines see your site the way you meant it.

## Questions

**Does the audit change anything on my site?**
Not by itself. Running it only reads your pages. Changes happen when you click Apply on a list of fixes, or Turn on for a switch.

**What does Auto fix change in my posts?**
Only the meta description or the SEO title in the post's settings. Your post's text and its own title stay as they are.

**Do I need a staff token?**
Only to fix your site description. Everything else works with the Ghost connection you already use to deploy.

**When does Google see the fixes?**
The fixes are on your site at once, and Google picks them up the next time it visits each page. For an important page you can ask for it sooner with the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console.

**Is there a page limit?**
Each run checks up to 200 pages. For a bigger site, fix what the first run finds and run it again.

Site audit is in **Settings** in the [Ectobuilder editor](https://editor.ectobuilder.com/?ref=ectobuilder.com). Connect your Ghost site, run it, and see what your site looks like to a search engine.
