Ectobuilder's MCP connector lets an AI assistant such as Claude work on your Ghost site for you. It can build and edit your theme, and it can write, edit, schedule and publish your posts and pages. You describe the result you want in plain words; the assistant does the clicking.

This guide shows what that looks like in practice: real prompts, what happens after you send them, and complete content workflows where one message takes a post from idea to a finished draft with screenshots. If you haven't connected Claude yet, start with [How to build Ghost themes with Claude and Ectobuilder](https://www.ectobuilder.com/blog/connect-claude-to-ectobuilder/); setup takes about two minutes.

*This article was made with the workflow it describes. Claude researched it, took the screenshots, wrote it and saved it to our Ghost site as a draft through the Ectobuilder connector. A person then read it, edited it and pressed publish.*

## What the connector can do

Once connected, the assistant has a set of tools that cover your theme and your Ghost site:

| Area | What the assistant can do |
| ---------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Posts | List and read posts, write new drafts with headings, images, links and quotes, edit any post, change tags, cover image, excerpt and visibility |
| Publishing | Publish now or schedule for later, unpublish, and send a post as a newsletter only when you ask |
| Pages | Create Ghost pages, including landing pages that use a custom template from your theme |
| Theme | Create themes, add, replace, move and remove sections from a library of about 270, edit text, links and images, and set colours, fonts, corners and spacing |
| Images | Search free Unsplash photos, upload images and place them in the theme or in posts |
| Checking | Take screenshots of any theme page on desktop or mobile, so the assistant can see its own work |
| Going live | Deploy the theme to your Ghost site |

Everything the assistant writes lands as a draft first. Nothing goes public until you, or the assistant at your request, publishes it.

## Workflow 1: write a finished post, screenshots included

This is the workflow that saves the most time. You send one message:

> Write a post comparing beehiiv and Substack for 2026\. Check current prices on their websites, take screenshots of the pricing pages and highlight the key numbers. Add a comparison table and an FAQ. Tag it Guides and Substack and save it as a draft on my Ghost site.

Here's what happens next, without further input from you:

1. **Research.** The assistant searches the web and reads the current pricing pages, so the numbers are from today, not from its training data.
2. **Screenshots.** With a browser tool such as Claude in Chrome, it opens the pages, captures them and draws numbered highlights on the parts that matter.
3. **Writing.** It drafts the article: headings, table, FAQ, sources and links to your other posts.
4. **Uploading.** It uploads the images so they're hosted online.
5. **Saving.** It creates the post in Ghost through Ectobuilder, as a draft, with the title, tags, excerpt and cover image filled in.

You get a link to the draft. Open it in Ghost, read it, change what you'd say differently and publish.

A few tips make the results better:

- **Name the sources.** "Check prices on their own pricing pages" gets you official numbers instead of third-party summaries.
- **Say what the screenshots should show.** "Highlight the 10% fee" beats "add screenshots".
- **Ask for links to your own posts.** The assistant can list your published posts and link to the relevant ones.
- **Give it your voice once.** "Short sentences, no hype, British spelling" carries through the whole article.

**Tip:** screenshots and other images from your computer upload fastest when Claude is allowed to reach `editor.ectobuilder.com`. Add it in Claude under **Settings → Capabilities** ([how to](https://www.ectobuilder.com/blog/connect-claude-to-ectobuilder/#optional-faster-image-uploads)). Without it, uploads still work, just more slowly.

## Workflow 2: update old posts in bulk

Prices change, products get renamed and links break. Instead of opening posts one by one:

> Find every post on my site that mentions Ghost(Pro) prices. Check the current prices on ghost.org and update any that are out of date. Don't publish anything new; just fix the existing posts and tell me what you changed.

The assistant lists your posts, reads each one, compares it with the source and edits only what's wrong. Then it reports back with a list of changes. Other prompts that work well:

- "Add a short 'Related reading' section to the end of every Substack guide, linking to the other Substack guides."
- "Our product was renamed from Ghost Theme Studio to Ectobuilder. Update every post that uses the old name."
- "Make the excerpts of my last ten posts shorter than 150 characters."
- "Change the cover image of my migration guide to this screenshot."

## Workflow 3: publish and schedule, safely

> Schedule the beehiiv vs Substack post for Tuesday at 9:00 Warsaw time. Don't email it to subscribers.

Publishing never sends an email unless you say so. The connector only emails a post to your members when the request explicitly asks for it, because a sent newsletter can't be recalled. When you do want it:

> Publish my October update now and send it as a newsletter to paying members only.

You can also take a post back down with "unpublish the pricing post", which returns it to draft.

## Workflow 4: build a landing page and publish it

> Create a landing page template for my free email course: a hero with a signup form, three benefits, a testimonial and an FAQ. Use my theme's colours, check it on mobile, deploy the theme, then create a Ghost page at /course/ that uses the template.

The assistant searches Ectobuilder's section library, looks at thumbnails to pick sections that fit, places them, writes the copy and screenshots the page on desktop and mobile to check spacing and balance. Then it deploys the theme and creates the page on your site as a draft. Deploying switches your live design, so it's worth saying "ask me before deploying" if you'd like to look first.

![A newsletter theme open in the Ectobuilder editor](https://www.ectobuilder.com/content/images/2026/10/ectobuilder-editor-newsletter-theme.webp)

Everything the assistant builds appears in the Ectobuilder editor, where you can keep editing by hand.

## Workflow 5: redesign without touching code

Theme changes work the same way. A few examples:

- "Make the homepage feel calmer: more white space, a serif for headings, and a softer accent colour."
- "Replace the hero with one that has a photo on the right. Find a photo of a writing desk on Unsplash."
- "Add a subscribe box after the third post on the blog page."
- "Our header has too many links. Keep Home, Blog, About and a Subscribe button."
- "Show me the post page on mobile and fix anything that looks cramped."

Colour, font, corner and spacing changes apply to the whole theme at once. Header and footer changes reach every page, because Ghost shares them site-wide. If the theme is open in the editor while the assistant works, the editor notices and offers to reload.

## A prompt library to copy

- "List my drafts and tell me which ones are nearly ready to publish."
- "Turn my notes below into a post with an intro, three sections and a conclusion. Save as a draft."
- "Rewrite the intro of my latest post to be half as long."
- "Make my 'Pricing guide' post members-only."
- "Add a cover image to every post that doesn't have one, using fitting Unsplash photos."
- "Create a new theme laid out like a Substack newsletter, with /p/ post addresses."
- "Take a screenshot of my home page and suggest three improvements, then make them."

## What it doesn't do (yet)

- **SEO meta fields.** The connector sets the title, slug, excerpt and cover image, but not the separate meta title and meta description. Fill those in Ghost's post settings, or Ghost uses the title and excerpt.
- **Deleting posts.** It can unpublish but not delete. Deleting stays a manual job in Ghost, on purpose.
- **Routes and redirects.** It doesn't touch `routes.yaml` or redirects. If a theme needs custom routes, upload the file in Ghost's settings.

## Which assistant and model to use

The connector works with any AI assistant that supports custom MCP connectors, including Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. Quick edits like "change this heading" work well with any current model.

Long workflows are different. Researching, capturing and annotating screenshots, writing two thousand words and saving it all correctly can take dozens of steps, and a stronger model makes fewer mistakes along the way. We use Claude Opus 5.5 for full articles, with Claude in Chrome for screenshots, and it's what made this post.

## FAQ

#### Can the assistant publish without asking me?

Posts and pages are always created as drafts. Publishing happens only when you ask for it, and email only goes out when you explicitly ask for a newsletter send.

#### Does it need my Ghost password?

No. Ectobuilder connects to your Ghost site with an Admin API key from a custom integration, which you add once in your theme's site settings in Ectobuilder. The assistant works through Ectobuilder and never sees your password.

#### Can I edit what it writes?

Yes. Posts land in Ghost's normal editor, and theme changes appear in the Ectobuilder editor. Change anything by hand, or ask the assistant to.

#### Does it work with my existing Ghost theme?

Post and page tools reach your site through an Ectobuilder theme that's connected to it, but they work whichever theme your site is actually running. Theme editing works on themes built in Ectobuilder.
